Hot and dry weather continues to grip the interior regions of Northern California today, though a gradual cooling trend is expected as the weekend approaches. The National Weather Service in Eureka reports that the return of the marine layer tonight will bring persistent stratus and fog along the coast, with breezy west to northwest winds potentially increasing fire danger in inland areas on Thursday and Friday.

The upper-level trough moving into the Pacific Northwest has allowed some marine clouds to return, but their impact will be limited, with the immediate coast possibly remaining cloudy. Inland areas will see slightly cooler temperatures today, though relative humidity will remain low, keeping fire danger elevated. As the trough deepens on Friday, inland temperatures will cool further, and the marine layer will extend farther inland.

This cooling trend will continue over the weekend, with inland temperatures gradually dropping by a few degrees each day. However, Eastern Trinity and Lake counties will see a slower decline in temperatures. Early next week, the upper-level trough is expected to linger, keeping temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s in the interior valleys.
