Northern California is set to experience a gradual cooling trend this weekend, with above-normal temperatures in the interior expected to decrease to near or below normal levels by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Eureka. Coastal areas will continue to see cool conditions with persistent fog and drizzle, particularly along the North Coast.

Today, the region saw temperatures running 4 to 11 degrees cooler compared to yesterday, thanks to the influence of onshore moisture. Breezy conditions have also been observed, with gusts reaching 25 mph in some interior areas. Despite the cooling trend, temperatures will remain above normal in Lake, Trinity, interior Mendocino, and northeastern Humboldt counties through Saturday.

The coastal areas, on the other hand, will stay seasonably cool, with stratus clouds and a chance of drizzle continuing throughout the weekend. As a shortwave trough approaches the West Coast on Sunday, isolated showers may develop over the mountains of northeastern Trinity County.

Looking ahead to next week, an upper-level trough will linger over the area, bringing continued cooler temperatures, especially in the interior. While no significant precipitation is expected, there could be some light coastal drizzle and mountain showers. A significant warm-up is considered unlikely, with only a small chance of temperatures reaching 100 degrees in interior locations like Big Bar.
