The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is urging boaters to exercise caution as an abundance of humpback whales have been spotted nearshore in Monterey Bay, Greater Farallones national marine sanctuaries, and inside San Francisco’s Golden Gate. With whales migrating closer to shore to feed on fish and krill, the risk of vessel strikes has increased, posing dangers to both marine life and ocean users.

NOAA’s sanctuaries recommend that boaters slow down, maintain no-wake speed, and keep a safe distance of at least 100 yards from whales. Boaters are advised to put their engines in neutral when whales approach and avoid pursuing or following marine wildlife.

"By following these guidelines, ocean users can safely enjoy the presence of whales while minimizing their impact on these magnificent creatures," said Maria Brown, superintendent of Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries.

The agency also highlights that larger vessels should reduce speeds to 10 knots when navigating through sanctuary waters to protect whales, especially vulnerable calves.
