The Reno area is bracing for critical fire weather conditions on Monday, as strong winds and low humidity combine to create a heightened risk. According to the National Weather Service in Reno, southwest winds will increase this afternoon, with gusts reaching 25-30 mph, leading to elevated fire concerns and choppy conditions on area lakes.

On Monday, a shortwave trough moving through northern California into the Great Basin will bring even stronger winds, with gusts of 30-35 mph across lower elevations and up to 60 mph along ridgetops, according to the NWS. These winds, coupled with low daytime humidity, will result in several hours of critical fire weather conditions, particularly from the Sierra Front eastward to the Basin and Range.

In addition to the fire risk, residents should be prepared for cooler temperatures, bumpy flights, and rough lake waters as the week progresses. Cooler and breezy conditions are expected to persist throughout the week, with dry weather and below-normal temperatures likely. Smoke from California wildfires may also affect air quality in western Lassen County and the Sierra Front.
