As the new academic year begins, Governor Gavin Newsom is urging all California schools to restrict cell phone use in classrooms to enhance student well-being and academic focus. In a letter addressed to school leaders across the state, Newsom highlighted the growing concerns over smartphone distractions and their impact on mental health, citing studies linking excessive phone use to increased anxiety, depression, and decreased academic performance.

The Governor praised districts like Los Angeles Unified and Santa Barbara Unified, which have already implemented such restrictions, and encouraged others to follow suit. In 2019, Newsom signed AB 272, giving school districts the authority to regulate smartphone use during school hours. Now, he is pushing for further legislation to limit phone use on campuses statewide.

"Reducing phone use in class leads to improved concentration, better academic outcomes, and enhanced social interactions," Newsom stated, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

As California students return to school, the Governor's call to action seeks to create a more focused and supportive learning environment, free from the distractions and pressures of social media.
