Caltrain is preparing to auction off its EMD FP40PH-2 Locomotive, a vintage piece of machinery dating back to 1985.

Though the train engine is disabled, the transit agency emphasizes that the locomotive was "gently used" throughout its four decades of service, covering over a million miles.

While the locomotive is no longer fit for transportation, Caltrain sees potential for its next chapter. Rather than being scrapped, they suggest the locomotive could be repurposed as a unique Airbnb destination or for other creative uses. Ideas include incorporating it into a model train set, transforming it into a train-themed diner, or even using it as ornamental lawn decor.

For those interested in adding a piece of rail history to their property, the upcoming auction presents a rare opportunity.
