Caltrans has temporarily stopped excavation work on Highway 1 at Regent’s Slide, located 45 miles south of Carmel, due to continued slide activity. While most of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast remains open, the 6.8-mile stretch near Regent’s Slide will stay closed as engineers assess the situation.

During recent excavation, crews noticed surface cracking around the site, indicating that the slide was still active. For safety reasons, Caltrans paused the work and installed sensors to monitor the movement. Data from these sensors will help determine when it is safe to resume repairs.

Highway 1 has been closed at Regent’s Slide since February 9, 2024, following a massive slide that buried the roadway. Despite progress, the challenging terrain has required frequent adjustments to the repair strategy.

While through travel from Carmel to Cambria is not possible, access to the communities of Cambria, San Simeon, and other south coast attractions remains available from Southern California. Similarly, businesses and attractions south of Monterey and Carmel are accessible from Northern California. Caltrans will provide updates on the reopening timeline as more information becomes available.
