Ajinomoto Bio-Pharma Services is cutting 71 positions, or 13% of its U.S. workforce, at its San Diego location. The layoffs are part of a strategic shift following the company's acquisition of Forge Biologics, a viral vector and plasmid specialist, for $620 million last fall.

The company plans to consolidate its drug substance production at the Columbus, Ohio, plant acquired through the deal, while the San Diego site will focus solely on fill-finish services.

Affected employees will receive severance packages as Ajinomoto aims to streamline operations and enhance efficiency across its facilities. The restructuring is designed to better align with the company’s new focus and improve service to its customers.
