On Wednesday, a California city council approved a plan to lay off 19 employees to address a severe financial shortfall. The council voted 4-1 to eliminate 16 positions across four departments, aiming to save $1.3 million as the city faces a $4 million annual deficit. The deficit was exacerbated by the rejection of Measure A, a special parcel tax renewal, by over 55% of voters in March.

Mayor Pro Tem Ronald Smith emphasized that the layoffs, affecting facilities, police, parks, and public works departments, are a necessary step in response to the failed tax measure and not a punishment for the community.
