San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has officially launched the Terminal 3 West Modernization project, a $2.6 billion initiative to renovate and expand the western half of Terminal 3. The project, which will add 200,000 square feet of new space, aims to enhance the airport experience with upgraded passenger amenities, an expanded security checkpoint, and additional food, beverage, and retail options.

Scheduled for completion in fall 2027, the project includes a seismic retrofit, a new façade, and improved check-in areas, with sustainability at the forefront, targeting LEED Platinum certification. The six-story building housing airline lounges and office space is expected to open in early 2028, followed by a renovated check-in lobby in early 2029.

Mayor London Breed emphasized that the project would ensure SFO continues to reflect San Francisco's innovation, sustainability, and diversity. SFO Airport Director Ivar C. Satero echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project's goal of creating an extraordinary airport experience.

United Airlines, a key partner in the project, expressed its commitment to San Francisco and its excitement over the state-of-the-art improvements. The modernization is expected to employ 500-600 workers at its peak and aims to award over $173 million in contracts to Local Business Enterprises (LBE). A temporary walkway will be available for passengers by the 2024 holiday travel season, ensuring minimal disruption during construction.
