Senator Dave Cortese (D-San Jose) announced that the California Assembly has approved Senate Bill 1445 (SB 1445), which now moves to Governor Newsom for signing. The bill aims to amplify student voices in school expulsion hearings by allowing student board members to access limited case information and recommend restorative justice approaches during deliberations. This measure ensures that the student perspective is included without involving them directly in confidential hearings.

"SB 1445 recognizes the invaluable perspectives students bring to discussions on discipline and safety," said Senator Cortese. The bill is sponsored by the California Association of Student Councils (CASC), emphasizing student advocacy and resolution over punitive measures.
