The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Francisco has issued a weather update for the Bay Area, forecasting light rain with a chance of more localized moderate-to-heavy showers throughout the day on Saturday, August 24, 2024. As of 9:00 AM, radar images indicate that more pronounced showers are moving into the region.

Although there is some instability in the atmosphere, as shown by the 12Z sounding from Oakland (OAK), the likelihood of thunderstorms remains low. The NWS notes that while the conditions are not ideal for lightning, a strike or two cannot be ruled out during the heaviest showers this morning.

The presence of a deep moist column in the atmosphere means that any lightning that does occur is likely to be accompanied by wetting rain, reducing the risk of dry lightning. The showers are part of a progressive weather pattern expected to bring light rain today, with temperatures set to rebound early next week before another trough moves into the Northwest by midweek.

Residents are advised to stay informed about changing weather conditions and be prepared for wet roads and potential localized downpours.
