Northvolt, a Swedish battery manufacturer, is closing its Bay Area subsidiary, Cuberg, Inc., and laying off nearly 200 employees as it consolidates its research and development operations in Sweden, state documents revealed.

According to a WARN document filed Tuesday with California officials, Cuberg’s facility in San Leandro will be shut down, affecting 196 workers, including engineers, technicians, executives, and scientists.

Cuberg’s founder and former CEO, Richard Wang, expressed his sadness over the closure on LinkedIn, highlighting the company’s nine-year legacy in lithium metal battery technology. The company had notable clients, including Boeing and several electric aircraft startups, according to the company's online profile.
