The city of San Diego has officially confirmed that the damaged Ocean Beach Pier, closed for years, will not be repaired but instead replaced. The decision, announced Friday, comes after months of speculation and signals the end of the 58-year-old pier's long history.

The pier has been closed since October 2023, when high surf caused significant damage. Further deterioration occurred last December when a support bracket broke off and fell into the ocean, making repair efforts increasingly unfeasible. In a report released Friday, the city stated that repairing the pier is no longer a viable option.

Signs of the city’s decision have been apparent for some time. In January, a notice posted on the pier hinted at potential demolition, and by April, design concepts for a proposed replacement were shown to community members.
