New Area Code to be Implemented That Covers Large Portion of Northern California

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has announced the introduction of a new 837 area code to the 530 area code region, effective January 31, 2025. This overlay is being implemented to meet the growing demand for new telephone numbers in northeastern California.

The 530 area code, which serves communities such as Chico, Davis, Redding, and South Lake Tahoe, will now share its geographic region with the new 837 area code. Customers requesting new service or additional lines may be assigned a number with the 837 area code starting in 2025.

Current phone numbers will not change, and local call procedures remain the same, with customers dialing 1 + the area code and number for all calls. The CPUC advises residents to continue using 10-digit dialing and to update their contacts accordingly.
