As Labor Day weekend approaches, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region urges visitors to plan ahead for their final summer celebrations. With 606 wildfires already recorded on California's national forests this year—96% of which were human-caused—the Forest Service emphasizes the importance of preparation and responsible recreation. “Labor Day weekend marks the change in seasons and is a popular time for people to visit our forests,” said Jim Bacon, Regional Director of Public Services. He reminds visitors that many forests are still recovering from wildfires and repairs. To #RecreateResponsibly, visitors should be prepared for heat by staying hydrated, avoiding high temperatures during hikes, and watching for hazards like damaged trees and high water. They are also encouraged to minimize their campfire impact, adhere to any fire restrictions, and ensure no trash is left behind to protect wildlife and water sources.
