California is stepping up its recycling efforts with the introduction of more than 250 new beverage container recycling sites across 30 counties, thanks to nearly $70 million in Beverage Container Redemption Innovation Grants awarded by CalRecycle. These new sites will offer modern recycling methods, including reverse vending machines, mobile recycling units, and bag-drop locations, making it easier for Californians to cash in their empty beverage containers.

Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “California is taking bold action to transform our recycling systems and reduce the waste filling our landfills and polluting the environment. These modernized recycling sites will make it easier for Californians in every corner of the state to help create a more sustainable and resilient future for our communities and the planet.”

The grants will fund innovative recycling projects across the state, including in underserved areas like Butte, Imperial, Mendocino, Merced, and Modoc counties. Supermarket chains Save Mart and Smart & Final are among the recipients, each receiving over $2 million to install reverse vending machines in 19 counties, providing consumers with a convenient way to redeem their beverage containers for cash.
