As the new school year begins, Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom are celebrating a significant milestone in California’s education system: the deployment of literacy coaches and reading specialists in hundreds of the state’s highest needs schools. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen literacy instruction and intervention for students across California.

During a visit to Dyer-Kelly Elementary School in Sacramento, Governor Newsom highlighted the state's commitment to ensuring every child has the tools to succeed in reading. “As we begin a new school year, California is doubling down on our commitment to our youngest learners by ensuring that no student falls behind in their reading,” said Newsom, drawing on his personal experience with dyslexia.

Alongside the deployment of literacy specialists, an initial cohort of 2,250 educators has completed a state-funded professional learning series, equipping them with the skills to enhance literacy education. These educators, supported by 12 regional hubs, will play a critical role in more than 200 local educational agencies (LEAs) across the state.
