California's roster of state symbols could soon expand, with two bills moving through the legislature to designate the banana slug and the Dungeness crab as official state symbols.

Assemblymember Gail Pellerin (D-Santa Cruz) introduced AB 1850 to recognize the banana slug as the official state slug. Found primarily in the state’s redwood forests, banana slugs have a unique relationship with redwood trees, helping to balance the ecosystem by competing with the trees’ seedlings for resources while benefiting from the cool, moist habitats provided by the towering giants.

In addition to the banana slug, the Dungeness crab is also being considered for official recognition. Assemblymember Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg) introduced AB 1797 to make the Dungeness crab California’s state crustacean. Known for its presence along the northern and central coasts and its popularity on restaurant menus, the Dungeness crab industry is a significant contributor to the state's economy.
