Senator Bill Dodd's measure to bolster wildfire safety has been approved by the California Assembly and is now headed to Governor Gavin Newsom for final approval. Senate Bill 504, introduced by Dodd, aims to strengthen defensible space standards by establishing an ember-resistant zone extending 5 to 30 feet from homes, especially benefiting new construction and home upgrades.

“With more destructive and frequent wildfires, we must take every opportunity to protect ourselves and our communities,” said Sen. Dodd. This bill builds on his previous wildfire legislation and seeks to enhance safety through improved clearing of combustible materials around homes.

The measure, supported by local governments including Santa Rosa, was approved by an overwhelming vote. Santa Rosa City Councilmember Chris Rogers emphasized the importance of these standards, stating, “Every inch of defensible space counts. I look forward to my community benefiting when this bill is signed into law.”

If signed, SB 504 will mark another step in California’s ongoing efforts to safeguard homes and communities from the increasing threat of wildfires.
