The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a warning for critical fire weather conditions today, as gusty winds sweep across the Sierra and western Nevada. A compact upper cyclone moving toward the West Coast is responsible for these conditions, with strong southwest flow aloft affecting the region.

Early this morning, weak elevated convection was detected from eastern Lassen County into northern Washoe County, though it has not yet produced significant vertical growth. This area, however, is at risk for isolated dry lightning through 7 AM, which could further exacerbate fire dangers.

As the upper low progresses eastward, it is expected to lift across the Pacific Northwest later today. The primary concern remains the strong gusty winds, which will significantly impact fire safety, aviation, and outdoor recreation. Ridgetop winds along the Sierra crest are already increasing, with gusts expected to reach between 55-75 mph by this afternoon. In lower elevations, southwest to west gusts of 30-40 mph are anticipated, particularly from noon through the early evening.
