Southern California is bracing for a potentially dangerous heatwave, set to peak from Wednesday through Friday, with temperatures reaching scorching highs of 110 degrees or more in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued Excessive Heat Warnings for much of the region, particularly the valleys, including the western San Fernando Valley, where temperatures could hit a blistering 113 degrees on Thursday.

Today, a shallow marine layer has brought low clouds to coastal areas, but these will quickly clear, leading to sunny skies and rising temperatures. The heat will intensify as an upper high-pressure system strengthens over Southern California, driving temperatures 3 to 6 degrees above normal today and even higher in the coming days. Areas away from the coast will see maximum temperatures ranging from 95 to 105 degrees, with the hottest valleys experiencing even more extreme conditions.

Wednesday will bring further warming, with temperatures climbing another 2 to 4 degrees. The heat will be accompanied by warmer-than-normal overnight lows, offering little respite, as some interior areas will only cool to the 70s, and isolated hot spots may not fall below 80 degrees.

Thursday is expected to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures soaring between 100 and 110 degrees in many areas, and potentially reaching 113 degrees in the western San Fernando Valley. Coastal areas, typically cooler, will also experience significant warming, with a 40 to 50 percent chance that heat advisories will be needed.
