World Famous Dog Surfing Competition Kicks Off in Southern California

Del Mar, CA - The waves are rolling in, and so are the dogs! Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 19th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon, presented by Blue Buffalo, kicks off today, Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Del Mar Dog Beach. This highly anticipated event is the largest of its kind, attracting over 50 surf-ready pups from across the country.

Since its inception, the Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon has become a fixture in the canine sporting world. But it’s not just about fun and waves – it’s about saving lives. Every dollar raised goes directly to Helen Woodward Animal Center’s programs to support orphan pets.

Furry athletes will hit the waves, showing off their skills in 10-minute heats. They’ll be judged by a panel of surf pros and aficionados on ride length, technique, enthusiasm, and board confidence. Winners will be crowned across multiple weight classes, with the top dogs advancing to compete for the ultimate title – Best-In-Surf.

The competition doesn’t stop there. A Freestyle Surf Contest will award points for creativity, while the fan-favorite Duos & Trios category sees two or even three dogs shredding the same board. Dogs and humans will also team up for the Peeps & Pups tandem competition.
