Local California groups look to revitalize underused Black churches throughout Southern California

In an innovative partnership, Logos Faith Development LLC (LOGOS) and the University of Southern California School of Architecture (USC SOA) are set to revitalize underutilized church properties throughout Los Angeles. The initiative, titled "The Money Train – The Last Mile," aims to highlight and enhance the role of Black churches in the community, integrating faith with cutting-edge design.

This ambitious project seeks to convert selected church spaces into multifunctional areas that address pressing community needs. Initially, these spaces will serve as hubs for hydroponic grow centers to tackle food insecurity, and back-to-school programs to support local youth. Eventually, they will evolve into vibrant centers for art exhibitions, cultural events, and community engagement.

As Los Angeles prepares for the 2028 Olympics, the USC-LOGOS Collaboration envisions these revitalized church properties as central pillars of cultural and spiritual innovation. The goal is to showcase how innovative design can breathe new life into overlooked spaces, creating thriving centers that benefit the community.

Logos Faith Development is partnering with Walker & Dunlop and leveraging Pastor Martin Porter’s connections to secure financial backing for the project. Kevin Sherrod, known for his award-winning sustainable and inclusive urban designs, has crafted "The Money Train" to merge functionality with profound artistic expression, reflecting the historic and spiritual essence of each site.
