    Southern California cities set, shatter heat records during brutal hot weather event

    Southern California experienced a record-breaking heatwave on September 8, 2024, as multiple locations set new highs for both maximum and minimum temperatures. According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, several cities reached unprecedented temperatures, surpassing previous records.

    In Anaheim, the temperature soared to 107°F, breaking the old record of 103°F set in 2022. Santa Ana recorded a high of 106°F, topping the 105°F mark from 1984. Riverside and Escondido both hit 110°F, surpassing the previous highs of 109°F in 1944 and 104°F in 1944, respectively. Ramona reached 110°F, breaking its previous record of 103°F set in 2018. Alpine recorded a high of 105°F, exceeding the 104°F record from 1984, while El Cajon saw temperatures rise to 108°F, surpassing the 104°F record set in 1984.

    In addition to the extreme daytime temperatures, several locations also recorded record-breaking minimum temperatures. Anaheim, Santa Ana, and San Diego each tied their records for highest minimum temperature, all at 75°F. Riverside experienced a new record low of 80°F, surpassing the 75°F set in 2022. Other notable records include Palm Springs at 88°F, Indio at 89°F, and Borrego Springs at 85°F.
