SACRAMENTO – Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis has officially declared September 11, 2024, as Patriot Day in California, marking 23 years since the tragic terrorist attacks that changed the nation. In a proclamation released today, Kounalakis emphasized the importance of remembering the lives lost, honoring the bravery of first responders, and paying tribute to the military personnel who defended the country in the wake of the attacks.

“On this 11th day of September, we mark 23 years since our nation came under devastating attack by terrorists seeking to destroy our spirit and cherished values,” Kounalakis wrote. “On Patriot Day, we honor the precious lives lost in this tragedy and the heroism of all the courageous first responders and civilians who rushed into harm’s way to help others.”

The proclamation also highlights the sacrifices of U.S. service members who answered the call to defend the nation in the wars that followed. Among them were 776 Californians who gave their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq, part of the more than 7,000 American soldiers who died protecting democracy.
