The Union City Police Department, along with other law enforcement and health agencies, is spotlighting the importance of using the correct car seat for children during Child Passenger Safety Week, running from September 15-21.

This annual campaign urges parents and caregivers to ensure their children are riding in car seats, booster seats, or properly fitted seat belts that match their age and size. Sgt. Steven Fong of the Union City Police emphasized, “Every child deserves to travel safely. Taking a few minutes to check your child’s seat can make all the difference in a crash.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 46% of car seats are misused, though correctly installed seats can reduce fatal injuries by up to 71% for infants.

California law mandates that children under 2 must use rear-facing car seats, with additional guidelines for older children, ensuring their safety as they grow. Parents are encouraged to use the "Five-Step Test" to assess seat belt readiness.
