National Roundabouts Week Highlights Benefits of Roundabouts; California Slowly Rolls Them Out

Caltrans is celebrating National Roundabouts Week from September 16-20, raising awareness about the benefits of roundabouts for drivers, pedestrians, and communities. As part of the initiative, Caltrans is reminding drivers to follow key safety tips when navigating these intersections and highlighting why roundabouts are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional traffic signals.

Roundabouts help slow vehicle speeds to under 25 mph, leading to fewer severe crashes and enhancing safety for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Their yield-control design also promotes more efficient traffic flow by reducing unnecessary stops, cutting down on fuel use and pollution. Additionally, the elimination of traffic signals reduces energy consumption and maintenance costs, while also offering opportunities for aesthetic landscaping that enhances local communities.

Caltrans encourages everyone to review a step-by-step guide on roundabout navigation to improve safety and efficiency on the road.
