Major California highway to close for bridge replacement project; Airport traffic to be impacted

Santa Barbara County drivers should be prepared for disruptions on State Route 217 next week as a project to replace the San Jose Creek Bridge will necessitate full highway closures. On Monday, September 23, and Thursday, September 26, SR 217 will be closed in both directions between Hollister Avenue and Sandspit Road from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to facilitate the installation of new bridge girders.

Westbound travelers can detour via Hollister Avenue, while eastbound drivers should use Sandspit Road. The eastbound on-ramp at Sandspit Road will be closed throughout the project. Airport visitors are advised to use Fairview Avenue and Hollister Avenue to access US 101. Electronic message boards will be in place to guide travelers, and drivers should watch for bicycle riders in the area.

The $26 million project, managed by MCM Construction Inc., is expected to be completed by Summer 2025. Meanwhile, work continues on the southbound US 101 San Jose Creek Bridge, with concrete piling and abutment wall construction ongoing. This $20 million project, also overseen by MCM Construction Inc., is slated for completion by June 2026.
