Cooler, unsettled weather is expected across Northern California today, with scattered showers and thunderstorms primarily affecting the mountains and foothills, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sacramento. The system moving through the region has prompted a Flash Flood Watch for the Park Fire burn scar area, where thunderstorms could trigger debris flows and flooding.

The Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. PDT today due to a 30-40% chance of thunderstorms in the eastern portion of the burn scar. These storms are expected to move from east to west, carrying the potential for heavy rainfall. With the burn scar's vulnerability to flooding and debris flow, residents and emergency responders are urged to remain vigilant.

This weather system, which is tracking further south than the one earlier this week, is bringing a warmer airmass, resulting in a weaker thunderstorm signal for the region. Nevertheless, the Sierra Nevada and its adjacent foothills are likely to see the most storm activity, with a 15-40% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Rainfall in the Sierra and foothills could total between 0.10 and 0.50 inches, with up to an inch possible along the Sierra crest.
