SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom visited the community of East Orosi today to address its failing sewer system and sign legislation aimed at expanding access to clean drinking water for underserved communities. Newsom signed AB 805, giving the state more authority to intervene in failing sewer systems, and enacted additional measures to enhance water safety.

"Every Californian deserves access to basic sanitation services and clean drinking water," said Newsom. "These laws will help support neglected communities and restore their access to vital services."

The new law empowers the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) to step in where sewer services are inadequate, appoint administrators, and provide technical and financial support. Alongside this, Newsom signed SB 1188 and AB 2454 to strengthen small water systems and require well testing for rental properties.

Since 2019, nearly 900,000 Californians have gained access to clean drinking water through state initiatives, including the SAFER program, which has distributed over $1 billion to disadvantaged communities.
