Celebrity chef brings Oklahoma-style onion burger to celebrated California fast food chain

Bay Area and Sacramento residents now have the chance to taste a fresh take on a classic American burger, as Local Kitchens partners with celebrity chef and burger expert Alvin Cailan to launch the Sweet Onion Burger. This marks Cailan’s first-ever Northern California venture, with the burger debuting on September 26th at all 13 Local Kitchens locations across the region.

The Sweet Onion Burger, inspired by the Oklahoma Onion Burger, is the latest creation from Cailan, known for his culinary accolades in the burger world. Cailan’s fame initially grew from founding the popular restaurant Eggslut, followed by his acclaimed work at LA’s Amboy Quality Meats. He also hosts the viral YouTube series, The Burger Show, which has garnered over 129 million views. His burger expertise extends to consulting for the animated series Bob’s Burgers.

Local Kitchens, a Bay Area-based micro food hall concept, collaborated with Cailan to bring his take on this beloved American classic to Northern California diners. “At Local Kitchens, our vision is to break down borders by connecting communities with flavors and stories from around the world,” said Jon Goldsmith, CEO of Local Kitchens. “Alvin Cailan’s Sweet Onion Burger celebrates an Oklahoma tradition, and we're thrilled to bring this exceptional brand to our guests across Northern California.”

The Sweet Onion Burger has deep roots in the Great Depression era, hailing from Oklahoma, where its straightforward combination of beef, onions, and cheese became a culinary staple. Cailan’s version honors that tradition while adding his own flair, featuring Angus beef seared with thinly shaved onions, topped with American cheese, dill pickles, and a toasted bun. Unique elements like savory bacon jam and Cailan’s signature SOB sauce elevate the dish even further.
