The Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies program, aimed at reducing ship speeds to protect marine life and improve air quality, has released its 2024 mid-season report. This season, the program saw a record 37 shipping companies enroll, with 14 achieving the highest recognition, the Sapphire award. These companies represent the majority of shipping traffic at California ports.

The program, which runs from May to December, encourages vessels to transit at 10 knots or less in key areas to reduce whale strikes and lower emissions. Ship traffic is a significant threat to whales, with an estimated 80 killed annually off the West Coast. Additionally, the program helps mitigate the impact of ship noise on ocean ecosystems.
