Major Heat Wave to Impact San Francisco Bay Area, Northern California Starting Monday

San Francisco, CA — The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting a significant heat wave to impact the San Francisco Bay Area beginning Monday and continuing through Wednesday. After a relatively pleasant weekend, temperatures are expected to soar to 10-20 degrees above normal, bringing widespread moderate to major heat risk throughout the region.

Today, the area is experiencing cooler and cloudy conditions, with a deep marine layer and some reports of light drizzle. However, a strong high-pressure ridge will begin building by Monday morning, leading to a drastic rise in temperatures. Inland areas could see highs surpassing 100°F, and even typically cooler coastal regions like East San Francisco, Oakland, and Santa Cruz are expected to hit the lower 90s by Tuesday.

The heat wave is also accompanied by dry, offshore winds, which will extend the high temperatures to the coast. While these winds are not expected to be particularly strong, they will reduce the usual afternoon sea breeze that provides some relief.

The NWS is warning of elevated heat risks, particularly for vulnerable populations and those without access to air conditioning. The agency urges residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during peak heat, and check on neighbors, especially the elderly.
