On October 1, 2024, Yosemite National Park marks a significant milestone, celebrating 134 years since its designation as the third national park in the United States by an Act of Congress in 1890. Following in the footsteps of Yellowstone (established in 1872) and Sequoia (also in 1890), Yosemite has become a cherished natural treasure, attracting millions of visitors each year.

While the anniversary highlights the park's official recognition, it is crucial to remember that the stunning landscapes we admire today were sculpted by the Tioga Glaciation over 20,000 years ago. Furthermore, the land has been home to various Indigenous tribes long before its designation as a national park. The Bishop Paiute Tribe, Bridgeport Indian Colony, Mono Lake Kootzaduka’a Tribe, North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California, Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians, Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation, and Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians have nurtured and cared for this land for thousands of years and continue to do so today.

Today, Yosemite's birthday is not just a celebration of its establishment but an acknowledgment of the ongoing commitment to preserving its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The park represents an evolving idea—one that embodies the collective efforts of those who seek to protect, understand, share, and experience its wonders.
