Northern California is set for another weekend of unseasonably high temperatures, as an upper-level ridge maintains its hold over the region. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), widespread Moderate to Major HeatRisk is expected in the Valley, Delta, and Foothills through Sunday, with limited relief until early next week.

Triple-Digit Heat Persists Temperatures are forecast to break 100°F in much of the interior, including the Delta, Foothills, and parts of the northern San Joaquin and central Sacramento Valleys. The NWS reports a 60-90% chance of triple-digit temperatures in these areas, with the highest probabilities in the Delta and Foothills.

This comes as the region continues to experience stagnant upper-level ridging, which is limiting the cooling effects of the Delta Breeze, making it harder for residents to escape the heat. The excessive heat, combined with little overnight relief, has prompted an extension of the Heat Advisory for these areas through Sunday night.

Heat Risk and Warnings The NWS warns of Moderate to Major HeatRisk for Saturday and Sunday, with Sunday expected to be the hottest day of the heatwave. High temperatures, coupled with a lack of strong onshore flow, will elevate the risk of heat-related illnesses. The advisory covers the Delta, northern San Joaquin Valley, central Sacramento Valley, and nearby Foothills.

Residents are advised to stay indoors during peak heat, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with health conditions. Cooling centers may be available in some communities to offer respite from the dangerous heat.

Relief Expected by Early Next Week The extreme temperatures are forecast to persist through Monday, with slight cooling beginning that evening. A subtle trough moving closer to the California coast will help induce a stronger Delta Breeze, bringing some relief to the region. By Tuesday, temperatures are expected to drop into the lower to mid-90s, with overnight lows also providing more substantial recovery.

While Tuesday's temperatures will still be above seasonal norms, the gradual cooling trend will continue into the week, offering much-needed respite for heat-weary residents. The HeatRisk will lower to minor levels as temperatures decrease and the overnight cooling helps mitigate the impacts.

Looking Ahead: Showers Possible Later in the Week In addition to the cooling trend, there is potential for some showers toward the end of next week as the weather pattern shifts. This would bring further relief from the extended period of high temperatures, though forecasts remain uncertain at this time.
