The greater Los Angeles area saw a significant drop in scripted film and television production in 2023, with a nearly 20% decline compared to the previous year, according to a report from FilmLA released Wednesday. The number of scripted projects in the region fell to 183, down 45 from 2022. This continues a multi-year trend of decreasing production in the area.

Once a dominant force in the industry, Los Angeles now accounts for only 18% of scripted projects, a sharp decline from 23% in 2021. Competing locations such as Ontario, New York, Georgia, and the United Kingdom have been drawing away more productions, adding to LA’s losses.

The drop highlights the increasing competition for film and television projects as other regions offer more attractive incentives for producers.
