Sam's Club to open its first "all digital store" without traditional checkout lanes in Texas

Sam’s Club is set to open a groundbreaking all-digital store in Grapevine, Texas, on October 17, marking a major shift in retail operations. According to CEO Chris Nicholas, the new store will not have traditional checkout lanes, making it the first of its kind for the company. The location is reopening after being closed for nearly two years due to tornado damage.

In a recent interview at GroceryShop 2024 in Las Vegas, Nicholas explained that customers will use the Scan & Go app on their smartphones to scan and pay for items as they shop. CNBC reported that one in three Sam’s Club members already use the app at other locations.

Where checkout lanes would normally be, the store will feature displays of online-only items, such as a 5-carat lab-grown diamond and a 12-foot Christmas tree. Shoppers can scan QR codes to learn more or make a purchase.
