Fewer homeless tents counted in California city renowned globally for rampant homelessness

San Francisco's streets are witnessing a notable decline in the number of tents, marking the lowest count since the city began tracking figures in 2018. According to new quarterly statistics announced by Mayor London Breed, only 242 tents and structures were recorded in the latest tally conducted this month. This represents a dramatic 60% decrease from the 609 tents counted in July 2023, when a steady decline in encampments began.

The recent survey revealed that there are now just five encampments consisting of five or more tents, down from 14 in July. Every supervisorial district saw reductions, with District 8 experiencing the most significant drop of 96%, while District 3 recorded a 9% decrease.

In addition to the reduced tent count, the mayor's office reported that outreach teams have successfully connected over 950 individuals to shelters since the start of the year.
