California University Requires Taking Climate Change Course as Graduation Requirement

This fall, UC San Diego launched a groundbreaking graduation requirement for its undergraduate students—a course on climate change. Beginning with the incoming class, students of all majors must take a climate-related class as part of their general education. Course options cover a range of topics, from politics and natural disasters to geochemistry.

The initiative, named the Jane Teranes Climate Change Education Requirement after a respected Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor, aims to equip students with critical knowledge about climate change and solutions to address it. UCSD officials believe this is the first such program at a major California public university.
