The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a forecast indicating calm weather and above-average temperatures for today and tomorrow. As a short-wave ridge passes through the region, residents can expect clear skies and light winds, with temperatures hovering 8 to 12 degrees above normal for mid-October.

However, a significant shift is on the horizon as a storm system is set to arrive on Wednesday, bringing cooler temperatures and the chance of showers. Early morning precipitation is expected to begin in the Sierra, particularly from the Tahoe Basin northward into northeast California and far northwest Nevada. As the day progresses, the rain will extend into western Nevada and the eastern Sierra, continuing into the evening for the inner basins and ranges.

The most substantial rainfall, with accumulations ranging from 0.10 to 0.30 inches, will likely occur in the eastern Sierra. Snow is anticipated at elevations above 10,000 feet, with snow levels dropping to around 8,000 feet by Wednesday night. While initial snow accumulations are expected to be light, with a trace to one inch, gusty winds of 40 to 50 mph will accompany the system, particularly along the Sierra crests.
