San Diego’s Smart Streetlight and Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology is making a significant impact on crime-solving efforts, according to city officials. Since its reintroduction by Mayor Todd Gloria and the San Diego City Council last year, this advanced technology has been instrumental in aiding the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) in multiple criminal investigations.

In 2024 alone, the technology has contributed to 229 criminal cases, resulting in 166 arrests. A notable success includes its role in a recent attempted kidnapping case near Mission Valley Mall, where ALPR helped officers track the suspect’s vehicle, leading to a swift apprehension.

“The results speak for themselves,” said Mayor Gloria. “Smart Streetlights and ALPR technology have proven to be essential tools for our police officers, helping to quickly identify suspects and solve crimes. My number one responsibility as mayor is to keep San Diegans safe — these tools are helping us do that."
