CHP Santa Cruz Urges Drivers: Keep Bicycle Lanes Clear for Safety across California

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Santa Cruz is reminding drivers that bicycle lanes are not parking spots and blocking them is against the law. Under California Vehicle Code 21211(a) VC, it is illegal for anyone to stop, stand, sit, or loiter on a Class I bikeway or any public or private bicycle path if doing so obstructs the movement of bicyclists.

“This isn’t just about avoiding a ticket; it’s about keeping our roads safe for everyone,” a CHP spokesperson said. Vehicles parked in bike lanes can lead to serious accidents, jeopardizing the safety of cyclists. The CHP urges all drivers to do their part and keep bicycle lanes clear to ensure a safe environment for all road users.
