Metro’s iconic 2000-series trains will take their final ride tomorrow, October 19, marking the end of an era for Washington, D.C.’s transit system. The 6-car train will depart from Greenbelt at approximately 10 a.m. and will remain in regular passenger service until 3 p.m. Commemorative “2K last ride” decals will be displayed on each car, and train enthusiasts can track the journey live on WMATA’s website.

Introduced in the early 1980s, the 2000-series trains have operated for nearly 200 million miles and carried over 775 million passengers. However, as the fleet ages, reliability has decreased, with maintenance issues occurring nearly four times more frequently than with newer 7000-series trains. The retirement of these trains aims to improve service, reduce delays, and make way for a more dependable fleet.
