San Diego Sheriff Warns of Misleading THC Levels in Hemp-Derived Products

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, alongside community partners, is warning residents about hemp-derived products with undisclosed THC levels, posing potential health and safety risks. As the CBD market grows, mislabeled products have become more common in San Diego County, particularly in convenience stores, smoke shops, and major retail locations. These products, ranging from food and beverages to beauty and medicinal items, are sometimes inaccurately labeled as “THC-free.”

San Diego County Sheriff Kelly A. Martinez has led an investigation revealing that many of these products contain undisclosed THC, which can impair users’ ability to drive and even lead to accidental consumption by children due to packaging that appeals to younger demographics. Lab tests found THC in items marketed as “THC-free,” with some also containing psilocybin, a hallucinogenic compound that is illegal to sell.

Governor Gavin Newsom recently issued emergency regulations banning the sale of hemp-derived food, drinks, and dietary items containing any THC, with a minimum purchase age of 21.
