California Gas Prices Could Drop by 20 Cents Per Gallon Under Order from Governor Newsom

California Governor Gavin Newsom has directed the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to accelerate measures that could lower gas prices while maintaining environmental protections. Building on recent legislation aimed at transparency and price control in the oil industry, Newsom’s order tasks CARB with studying how California could introduce E15 fuel, a blend of gasoline containing 15% ethanol. Studies indicate that E15 could reduce prices by as much as $0.20 per gallon, potentially saving Californians up to $2.7 billion annually.

Governor Newsom highlighted the dual benefits of the E15 proposal, stating, “There’s massive potential for this to be a win-win for Californians: lowering gas prices by up to twenty cents per gallon while keeping our air clean.” Research by the University of California, Riverside supports the environmental viability of E15, finding it does not increase nitrogen oxide emissions and could reduce particulate matter.
