    Recipe: Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole

    Ingredients:

    • 5 cups shredded chicken
    • 9 ounces sliced deli-style black forest ham, cut into strips (about 9 slices)
    • 8 ounces sliced Swiss cheese (about 12 thin slices)

    For the Sauce:

    • 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
    • 1 Tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
    • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
    • 6 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 3 cups whole milk

    For the Topping:

    • 1 ½ cups Panko breadcrumbs
    • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
    • Chopped parsley (optional)

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a 9x13-inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
    2. Spread 5 cups of shredded chicken evenly across the baking dish.
    3. Layer the ham slices over the chicken, spreading them evenly.
    4. Place the Swiss cheese slices over the ham, overlapping slightly to cover the entire surface.
    5. In a medium saucepan, melt 6 Tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the Dijon mustard, lemon juice (if using), garlic powder, salt, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper.
    6. Gradually whisk in 6 Tablespoons of flour, forming a smooth paste.
    7. Slowly add 3 cups of milk, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens into a creamy sauce (about 4 minutes).
    8. Pour the sauce evenly over the cheese layer, spreading it as needed to cover the entire dish.
    9. In a small bowl, combine the Panko breadcrumbs with 4 Tablespoons of softened butter. Spread this mixture evenly over the top of the casserole.
    10. Bake uncovered for 30-40 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling and the breadcrumb topping is golden brown.
    11. Let the casserole sit for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.
