There’s nothing quite like the buttery flakiness of a freshly baked biscuit, especially when it’s inspired by the iconic KFC style. These biscuits are light, tender, and melt-in-your-mouth good. Perfectly golden and with just the right amount of crispiness on the outside, they’re a wonderful treat that can elevate any meal. Whether you’re serving them for breakfast, as a side to a hearty dinner, or just enjoying one with a bit of jam or honey, these biscuits bring that homestyle comfort right to your table.

The Secret to Perfectly Flaky Biscuits

Achieving that perfect, flaky texture is all about keeping your ingredients cold and handling the dough as little as possible. Chilled butter is the key, creating little pockets of steam as the biscuits bake, which gives them their classic layers. Pair that with a hot oven, and you’ll get biscuits that are tall, tender, and oh-so-delicious. Plus, this recipe is versatile—just a few simple substitutions, and you can make these biscuits dairy-free or a bit richer with whole wheat flour. No need for a trip to the drive-thru when you can whip up this comfort food classic right at home.

    Flaky KFC Style Biscuits Recipe

    Ingredients:

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour (substitute: whole wheat flour for a heartier option)
    • 1 tablespoon baking powder
    • 2 teaspoons white granulated sugar (substitute: brown sugar for a richer flavor)
    • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup chilled salted butter (substitute: coconut oil or vegan butter for dairy-free)
    • 2/3 cup milk (substitute: almond milk or oat milk for dairy-free)

    Directions:

    1. Preheat the Oven: Heat your oven to 415°F (210°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
    2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, cream of tartar, and salt. This sifting step ensures a lighter, fluffier biscuit.
    3. Cut in the Butter: Use a pastry blender, your hands, or even a knife and fork to cut the chilled butter into the flour mixture. Aim for a texture that resembles coarse crumbs—this is what creates those buttery, flaky layers.
    4. Add the Milk: Pour the milk into the mixture and stir with a fork until the dough starts to come together. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.
    5. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it becomes smooth. Handle it as little as possible to keep the biscuits tender.
    6. Roll and Cut: Roll the dough out to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a 3-inch biscuit cutter or a round glass to cut out the biscuits, or simply slice them into squares for a rustic look.
    7. Bake: Arrange the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they’re close but not touching. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the tops are beautifully risen and golden brown.
    8. Serve: Enjoy your biscuits warm from the oven or let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Brush the tops with melted butter for an extra touch of richness right before serving.

    Tips for the Best Biscuits:

    • For even more flavor, try brushing melted butter on the tops right as they come out of the oven.
    • If you’re out of a biscuit cutter, a glass or any round object works just as well.
    • These biscuits are versatile—serve them with eggs and bacon for breakfast, or alongside soups and stews for dinner.

Get ready to fall in love with the flakiness of these homemade biscuits! With their simple ingredients and straightforward method, they’re sure to become a staple in your kitchen, making every meal feel a bit more special. Happy baking!
