The Wyndham Championship could only official conclude on Monday morning after Matt Kuchar refused to complete his round with one hole to go.

Kuchar was the only player in the field who returned to Sedgefield Country Club on Monday after opting out of the tournament’s 72nd hole due to inclement weather.

Kuchar, who needed a win to keep his streak of reaching the FedEx Cup play-offs every year since 2007, was out of contention in a 10-way tie for 12th when he hooked his tee shot into the woods on the 18th hole.

Play was suspended after the other two players in the last group, Max Greyserman and Chad Ramey, teed off, enabling all three the opportunity to finish the hole as daylight waned.

However, although Ramey and Greyserman, who had ceded a four-shot lead after 13 holes but could still catch England’s Aaron Rai with an eagle, chose to finish, Kuchar notified tournament organisers that he would mark his ball and return Monday.

“I was trying to set an example for Max,” Kuchar told the Golf Channel.

“We were so far past when we should’ve stopped playing. We saw what Max did on hole 16 (four-putting for a double bogey) – they should’ve blown the horn there.

“I feel bad, the poor kid should’ve won this tournament. By me not playing, it may show Max he has an important shot to hit.”

Kuchar started his round at eight in the morning local time (1pm BST) and made a par putt on the 18th green six minutes later. He finished in a tie for 12th, earning Kuchar about £105,000 in prize money.

It’s unknown how many greenskeepers and tournament workers were needed on Monday to allow Kuchar to complete, but they were able to see the strange spectacle.

The TV crews packed up and left with Rai lifting the trophy on Sunday evening before Kuchar finished his round.

“I don’t expect we’re going to be bringing you that coverage tomorrow,” CBS commentator Jim Nantz joked.

Limited news cameras and onlookers did get down to capture the completion of the round.
