WATCH: Tony Finau takes divot out of concrete cart path!

Tony Finau found himself playing from the cart path during the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

He made pretty good connection but what fans really noticed was the small divot he took out of the path.

Finau has one of the great swings to watch on the PGA Tour.

Finau is one of golf’s longest hitters. His average ball speed is among the top ten on the PGA Tour, and he is also in the top 25 in terms of driving distance. Oh, and he accomplishes it all without ever truly letting his arms fly free in competition. When he makes an all-out effort, he can easily exceed 200 mph ball speed.

With so much power in his game, Finau is frequently asked about the best techniques for the average Joe to speed up their own game.

“The bigger you can make your arc, the farther the golf ball is gonna go,” Finau says. “If amateurs can just picture a nice wide takeaway and really just try to make the club move as far away from the golf ball as possible and then from there, you’re gonna be able to generate the maximum amount of speed that your body can generate.”

When you have a larger swing arc, the clubhead travels further and accelerates as it approaches contact. Swinging with a wider arc can also reduce your angle of attack, which is beneficial when fighting a slice.

“Getting that club as far as you can from the golf ball on the back swing is gonna ensure you’re gonna have to have some lag on the downswing,” Finau says. “You’re gonna make your arc wider that way, and that’s ultimately how you’re gonna create speed.”
